How to shop for a car loan without trashing your credit

Here’s something nobody tells you when you’re car shopping: every time you formally apply for finance, it leaves a mark on your credit file. Apply to a handful of lenders in a short space of time, and you can quietly damage the very thing that helps you get approved. Brutal, isn’t it?

The good news is it’s easy to avoid once you know how it works.

Every application leaves a footprint

In Australia, the credit reporting system records your enquiries — that’s the formal applications you make for credit. One or two over time is completely normal. But several in a few weeks is what’s known in the trade as “enquiry stacking,” and to a lender it looks like you’re either desperate for money or being knocked back everywhere. Neither’s a good look, even if neither is true.

Where it goes wrong

The classic trap is the dealership. You’re keen on a car, so the dealer “just checks a few lenders for you.” Sounds helpful — but if they fire off three or four formal applications to see who bites, that’s three or four enquiries stamped on your file. Same thing happens when people apply online to lender after lender, hunting for a better rate. Each click can be another mark.

Know the difference: a quote vs an application

A quote or an assessment is someone looking at your situation and giving you an idea of what’s possible. A formal application is the one that hits your file. You want to do all your comparing at the quote stage, and only let a formal application go through to a lender you’re actually likely to be approved by.

This is where a broker quietly saves your file

Instead of firing applications all over the place, we start by assessing you — including a soft look at your credit file that doesn’t leave a mark. We check your situation against what each lender’s actually after, then come back to you with the offers on the table. You decide which one suits you, and only then do we submit a single application to that lender. One enquiry, aimed at the right target, instead of a shotgun blast. It protects your file and sharpens your odds in one go.

Check your own file — it’s free and harmless

You’re entitled to see your own credit report, and checking it yourself has zero effect on your score. It’s worth doing before you start shopping so there are no nasty surprises down the track. In Australia there are three main credit bureaus — Equifax, illion, and Experian — and you can request a free copy of your report from each.

And if you’d rather not chase it yourself, no dramas — when you proceed with an application through TradeFin, we’re happy to pull a copy of your credit file for you.

Compare freely, apply carefully. Do your shopping at the quote stage, and only let a formal application through when you’ve got a strong chance of a yes. That way, you walk away with the car and your credit file intact.

Not sure where you stand? Get a quote first — we’ll assess your options before anything touches your file.
